Senior writer and journalist Abdul Ghaffar Chowdhury was suffering from various problems related to old age for a long time. He resided at 56 Methuen Road, Edgewater, Middlesex, London, UK until his death.

This well-known UK expatriate journalist served as the founding executive editor of weekly Joy Bangla, the first newspaper of independent Bengal registered through the Mujibnagar government during the war of independence. He was the composer of the memorable song of the language movement 'Amar Bhai'er Rangano Ekushe Februari'.

Eminent journalist, writer and columnist Abdul Ghaffar Chowdhury was born on 12th December 1934 in Ulania village of Mehendiganj upazila of Barisal district in Chowdhury house.

His father was Haji Wahid Reza Chowdhury and mother Mosammat Jahura Khatun. Among 3 brothers, 5 sisters, elder brother Hossain Reza Chowdhury and younger brother Ali Reza Chowdhury. The sisters are Manik Bibi, Laili Khatun, Saleha Khatun, Fazila Begum and Masuma Begum.

Apart from journalism, Abdul Ghaffar Chowdhury has also written stories, novels, memoirs and children's novels. He published about 30 books including 'Chandradwiper Upakhyan', 'Dheere Bahe Buriganga', 'Samrat's Picture', 'Bengali Na Bangladeshi'.

He also wrote several full-length plays. These include 'Ek Tahmina', 'Bloody August' and 'Palashi to Bangladesh'.

After the liberation war started in 1971, Abdul Ghaffar Chowdhury assumed the role of a pen warrior. Apart from serving as the executive editor of Joy Bangla newspaper, he played the role of moderator in the freedom fighters' camp. After independence, he was the editor-in-chief of Daily Janpad published from Dhaka.

He moved to London in October 1974. In 1976, Abdul Ghaffar Chowdhury also edited a weekly newspaper called 'Banglar Dak'. Later he launched the magazines 'New Day' and 'Purbadesh'.

Although Abdul Ghaffar Chowdhury is in exile, Ghaffar Chowdhury has regularly written columns in the main media of Bangladesh.
