During the visit, Pelosi also met with Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen. This time he also praised Taiwan's determination. He said the United States' commitment to Taiwan will remain steadfast.
Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen said China's military threat to his country is increasing day by day, but Taiwan will not back down.
Pelosi also met with rights activists in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan in Taipei. President Tsai also awarded Pelosi Taiwan's highest civilian honor. Prior to the visit, Pelosi expressed her support for the one-China policy pursued by the United States.
White House National Security Spokesman John Kerby said in Washington that the United States will not be intimidated by China's threats and rhetoric. He also said that China may engage in economic conflict with Taiwan and China-US relations will depend on China's future behavior.
Meanwhile, tension has arisen in the area as China has started exercises. It remains to be seen whether that tension will eventually lead to war.
The BBC quoted its correspondent as saying that 3 of the 6 areas where the Chinese exercise will take place are within 12 miles of the Taiwan coast, which is unprecedented.
Taiwan says this would amount to a Chinese blockade of its air and sea borders and a violation of UN conventions.
It should be noted that China considers Taiwan as part of its own and has on several occasions said it would retake the island "if necessary by force". However, Taiwan considers itself a sovereign state.
