The Dhaka Times Desk Country's legendary lyricist, composer, composer, film director and producer Gazi Mazharul Anwar passed away.
He was taken to the United Hospital when he suddenly fell ill at his residence in the capital at 7 am on Sunday (September 4). After being taken there, the doctor declared him dead.
Gazi Mazharul Anwar was born on February 22, 1943 in Taleshwar village of Daudkandi police station in Comilla. He was 79 years old at the time of his death.
Gazi Mazharul Anwar was a lifelong member of Gitikbi Sangh, the composer of numerous timeless songs including 'Jai Bangla, Banglar Jai', 'Ektara Tui Desh Katha Bal Re Eber Bol'. He received the Ekushey Padak in 2002 and the Freedom Award in 2021.
Gazi Mazharul Anwar also received the first award of the independent country 'Bangladesh President Gold Medal Award' for his special contribution in the war of independence. Moreover, he has received 110 awards including 5 times National Film Award, multiple times Bacchus Award, BJME Award, Life Time Award by Daily Star.
Gazi Mazharul Anwar composed more than 20 thousand songs in his long career of 60 years. 3 songs written by him are in the list of top 20 Bengali songs of all time in BBC Bangla survey.

Ghazi Mazharul Anwar started writing songs for Radio Pakistan from 1964 onwards. Also, he regularly composes songs and plays since the birth of Bangladesh Television. He wrote songs for the first film Ayana in 1967 and for the rest of the films.
Since his association with films in 1967, he has also shown skill in story, screenplay, dialogue and songwriting. His first directorial film Nantu Ghatak was released in 1982. The number of films directed by Gazi Mazharul Anwar is 41.
