He breathed his last on Tuesday (April 11) at 11:30 pm while undergoing treatment at Gonoshasthaya Nagar Hospital in Dhanmondi. He was 82 years old at the time of his death. Dr. Zafrullah was suffering from kidney complications for many years.
Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury was admitted to Gonoshasthaya Nagar Hospital last Wednesday in critical condition. A medical board was constituted on Sunday to look into his treatment. Its chief coordinator was Professor Brigadier General (Retd.) Mamun Mostafi.
The press release of Gonoshathya Kendra at 4 pm on Tuesday informed that Dr Zafrullah is still on ventilation. An infection was found in his blood. There is a positive response to the medication being given to control it.
Dr. Zafrullah was born on December 27, 1941 in Raujan of Chittagong district. While studying FRCS at the Royal College of Surgeons in Billet, when the independence war of Bangladesh started, he returned to India from London without finishing the final phase and took guerrilla training from the training center at Melaghar in Agartala to take part in the liberation war and then Dr. Along with MA Mobin, he established and managed the "Bangladesh Field Hospital" there.
He also played an important role in announcing the 'National Medicine Policy' of Bangladesh which was introduced in 1982. Dr. in recognition of unique contribution in the field of population control. Zafrullah received the Freedom Award in 1977. He also received Ramon Magsaysay (1985) from the Philippines and Right Lovelyhood (1992) known as an alternative Nobel from Sweden, 'International Health Hero' (2002) from the University of Berkeley in the United States and an honorary doctorate from Canada for services to humanity. In 2021, he received the Ahmad Sharif Memorial Award.
Recently, 82-year-old Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury's aging complications took a turn for the worse. Out of which he was taken on life support on Monday.
