The Dhaka Times Desk How strange things happen in the world every day. Recently, nine pairs of trained dogs (sniffer dogs) got married together in Sri Lanka and this incident created quite a stir in Sri Lanka.

Sniffer dogs are trained to detect explosives. Recently released pictures show nine pairs of dogs being married on a well-decorated wedding platform wearing traditional wedding shawls, hats, ties and socks.
In Kandy, the heart of Sri Lanka, the wedding ceremony was held in the presence of veterinarians, doctors, top officials and common people, and the marriage registration papers were also reportedly signed.
However, Sri Lanka's Culture and Industries Minister TB Ekananaike reprimanded the police officers for organizing the wedding ceremony. The Minister of Industry alleged that the arrangement of this wedding insulted the cultural heritage of Sri Lanka.
While police officials apologized for the incident, they defended themselves saying, “This marriage is a brilliant and amusing method for the natural breeding of sniffer dogs. The marriage is the result of an attempt to breed sniffer dogs to local food and climate, which could lead to their costly exportation."

The incident, which caused an uproar throughout Sri Lanka, embarrassed many government officials. An inquiry has also been ordered into the incident and the police are probing the matter following allegations of organizing such marriages against police officials.
