The plan is likely to become law next year, the report said. If this happens, today's children will not have the opportunity to smoke in the future.
New Zealand's Associate Health Minister Ayesha Verrall said in a tweet that New Zealand is taking a historic step towards a smoke-free future. As part of the 'Smoke Free 2025 Action Plan', they will also implement several bold measures, including banning the sale of cigarettes to future generations.
Cigarettes are currently banned in New Zealand for those under the age of 18. However, this age limit will be further reduced from the year 2027. Those who will then be 14 years old - it will not be legal for them to buy cigarettes. Not only that, the number of licensed cigarette sellers and nicotine levels will be consistently reduced.
The Tobacco Free Generation Act will be introduced to the New Zealand Parliament in June next year.
