The Dhaka Times Desk Overnight temperatures reached minus 78 degrees Celsius (minus 108 degrees Fahrenheit) in a bitterly cold wind over Mount Washington in the northeastern US state of New Hampshire.
The utility's office in Gray, Maine, said in a tweet that it set a new U.S. record for the lowest wind-chill temperature in the United States. CNN reported that it broke the previous record of minus 76 degrees Celsius in Alaska.
The previous lowest temperature on Mount Washington was minus 74 degrees Celsius, recorded there in 2004, the Weather Channel reported.
At nearly 6,300 feet, Mount Washington is the highest peak in the northeastern United States and is known for some of the worst weather in the world. The temperature is minus 43 Celsius and the wind is blowing at a speed of 110 miles per hour. This set the record for the lowest temperature.
The NWS reported that temperatures in New York's Central Park dropped to minus 16 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, wind-chill temperatures dipped below minus 34 Celsius in Boston, where public schools were also closed on Friday as a precaution.
