Signing of Agreement between JBITA and Basis Japan Desk

The Dhaka Times Desk The Japan Bangladesh IT Association (JBITA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with BASIS Japan Desk as the first non-governmental organization in the country after the Government of Bangladesh.

Under the agreement, JBITA will expand the business of Bangladesh's IT sector in Japan and BASIS Japan Desk will work with Japanese business areas in Bangladesh's IT sector.

This MoU was signed at the 17th 'BASIS SoftExpo 2023' organized by the Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS), the national trade organization of the country's information technology and software sector, at the Bangabandhu Bangladesh-China Friendship Exhibition Center in Purbachale yesterday, Saturday (25 February 2023). On behalf of BASIS Japan Desk, BASIS Director and BASIS Japan Desk President AKM Ahmadul Islam Babu and JBTA representative signed the MoU.

Before that, a round table meeting titled 'A Prospectus and Opportunity with Japan' was held. Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yuyama Kiminri was present as the chief guest in the meeting chaired by BASIS Director and BASIS Japan Desk President AKM Ahmedul Islam Babu. Secretary of Information and Communication Technology Department Md. Shamsul Arefin and Secretary of Foreign Ministry Masood Bin Momen were special guests. JICA Bangladesh chief representative Ichiguchi Tamuhide was present as the guest of honour.

Director General of Information and Communication Technology Directorate Mostafa Kamal, JBCCI President Hikari Kawai, Associate Professor Vishnu Kumar Adhikari of Doshisha University in Japan, Samira Zuberi Himika, Senior Vice President of BASIS and Rezwanur Kabir, Director and COO of KK Destiny also participated as discussants in the meeting.

JETRO's Country Representative Uji Ando presented the keynote. Also, Anjan Das, president of Japan-Bangladesh IT Association, presented a presentation on the potential of Bangladeshi companies in the Japanese market.

In the round table meeting, various issues of Bangladesh's work with Japan were highlighted. Japanese officials also talked about various issues of creating skilled manpower in Bangladesh. On behalf of Bangladesh, the representatives of the country were also informed about the benefits of investing in Bangladesh. Various topics including robotics, ICT, ITES were discussed there.

Later, Ichiguchi Tamuhide, head of Japan International Cooperation Agency or JICA in Bangladesh, said, 'I am glad to meet you and to be present at this event. We would like to thank Bangladesh on behalf of the Japanese government for working on one of the projects in Bangladesh.

He said, 'We are doing various works including construction of Bangladesh's first metro rail, third terminal of Shahjalal International Airport, Bangabandhu Rail Bridge over Yamuna, Gomti and Meghna Bridge, various roads, rail link on Padma.'

This official also said, 'Bangladesh is now very advanced in the field of ICT. We have partnered with ICT Division to implement Smart Bangladesh Vision 2041.

Hon'ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina implemented Digital Bangladesh, now JICA will play an exemplary role in transforming it into Smart Bangladesh.'

He said that about 300 engineers from Bangladesh are getting the opportunity to work in Japan. They will be able to use their acquired knowledge in Bangladesh. It is fully supported by JICA. Besides, we are working to make ICT engineers efficient in Bangladesh.

Information Technology Department Secretary Samsul Arefin said, 'Bangladesh's digital device market has now expanded. Brand products of the country and different countries are being produced in Bangladesh. Our startups and freelancers are now spread across the country.

Japan can also increase this advantage by building a good network infrastructure in the country. But in the meantime, Japan is doing various kinds of work for the development of our ICT.

Japanese ambassador Iwama Kiminori said at the event that JICA is doing great work with Bangladesh. We have to thank them for that. I'm brand new here, just two months.
