The Dhaka Times Desk India's main opposition Congress has strongly criticized Rahul Gandhi's move to revoke his parliamentary membership as politically motivated.
Congress party leaders are protesting across India against the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi, who was sentenced to two years in prison in a defamation case, as an MP in Parliament. India's main opposition Congress has also criticized the move as politically motivated against its former president Rahul Gandhi. However, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) denied the allegations saying that Rahul was expelled as per the rules of Parliament.
Hundreds of Congress leaders protested for the second day yesterday (Monday) in the capital Delhi against the rejection of Rahul's parliamentary membership. Congress party workers also staged protests in the states of Himachal, Rajasthan, Telangana, Punjab, Haryana and Gujarat. Leaders of other opposition parties in Delhi also joined the protest at Parliament Square, the BBC reported. Many of these angry leaders wore black during the first session of the Lok Sabha, the lower house of parliament, since Rahul's disqualification last week. Again there was a protest inside the parliament.
It may be noted that Rahul Gandhi was an MP of the Congress Party elected from Wanad in the southern state of Kerala. The 52-year-old leader is a member of the Nehru-Gandhi family. India got three prime ministers from this family. As the country's next elections are knocking at the door, the Lok Sabha disqualified Rahul. The court granted bail to Rahul for 30 days. Rahul's lawyers said they will appeal against the court's verdict.
