According to the statement of the head of the research team, in the near future, if humans can create a life-friendly environment on another planet, this sperm bank will be able to create a variety of animal species on that planet.
The spermatozoa are kept frozen with a special preservation liquid at a temperature of only 4 degrees Celsius. In the early stages, sperm from pandas, chimpanzees and giraffes were frozen. Researchers were previously able to fertilize mouse eggs with 5-year-old frozen sperm.
The researcher Dr. Takehito Kaneko said, “It may seem like a dream. But this is the best way to send animal genetic models of Earth into space."
When asked if the method will be applied to humans, the scientists said that they are not yet applying the method to humans because there are many more experimental steps left. However, they assured that the field of research will be expanded in the future.
