The Dhaka Times Desk WaterAid Bangladesh, in full collaboration with the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education, organized an awareness workshop on research related to menstrual health and experiences of adolescent girls in Bangladesh on Sunday 25 June 2023 at 10 am at Sirdap Auditorium, Dhaka.
WaterAid Bangladesh, Barnett Institute-Australia, James P. Grant School of Public Health, BRAC University and partner organization Navlok are jointly conducting this research program.
There is increasing awareness of women's menstrual health at the policy level and social practices. While there is qualitative research data on various related challenges, there is a paucity of empirical evidence on the impact of menstrual health on adolescent health and social conditions. The study, titled 'The Adolescent Menstrual Experiences and Health Cohort (AMEHC)', focuses on identifying changes in menstrual health needs over time. The aim of the study was to clarify the impact of unmet menstrual health needs of adolescent girls and to examine its correlation with education.
One of the objectives of the study was to understand the impact of different menstrual health-related problems on the physical and mental well-being of adolescents. In this regard, WaterAid Bangladesh Country Director Hasin Jahan said, “Adolescents face various obstacles in terms of physical, mental, social and even educational performance due to the mismanagement of menstruation. The research focuses on gaining a deeper understanding of the impact of various menstrual-related barriers on the lives of adolescent girls. Through this research project we will gain evidence-based guidelines for improving specific aspects of menstrual health management”.
Findings from the research will help the Bangladesh government and other non-governmental organizations to adopt programs to ensure age-appropriate education and adolescent health benefits for adolescent girls.
