A novel initiative to prevent the breeding of mosquitoes with mosquitoes!

The Dhaka Times Desk As part of the study, researchers released two million Asian tiger mosquitoes in a village in Switzerland. They have taken a novel initiative to prevent the breeding of mosquitoes with mosquitoes!

We have heard a lot about 'Masha Marte Kaman Daga'. But what if mosquitoes die by using mosquitoes like 'poisoning'? A project in Switzerland is trying to do just that.

It's like watching an Asian tiger mosquito colony in a lab. There is no shortage of mosquitoes from larvae to adults. Perhaps no other person in Europe has as deep a knowledge of tiger mosquito behavior as researcher Eleonora Flasio.

After many years of preparation, Eleonora embarked on an extraordinary experiment. He is looking to tackle the mosquito's rapid breeding in a brand new way. He adopted a strategy to achieve that goal by releasing sterile male mosquitoes.

In the picturesque village of Morcote in southern Switzerland, researchers are also releasing two million Asian tiger mosquitoes this year.

Since mid-May, Eleonora Chota has been releasing some mosquitoes every week in about 70 different places in this small village. However, despite the millions of mosquitoes, the villagers have no reason to worry. "There's really no reason to worry because these are actually male mosquitoes that never bite humans," says Eleonora. only flies. They die after a few days.”

The reason for the short lifespan of male mosquitoes is obvious. Sterilization processes, lab pressure and transportation make them quite fragile. However, despite their short lifespan, they are attractive to female mosquitoes. The reason is that male mosquitoes also have to compete. Due to the large number of sterile male mosquitoes, the female mosquitoes cannot even avoid them. "Sterilized male mosquitoes mate with natural female mosquitoes that graze in the fields," says Eleonora Flasio. After mating, the female mosquito cannot have children for the rest of her life.

In this way, the tiger mosquito population can be destroyed at last. Eleonora's main goal is to reduce the number of tiger mosquitoes in the experimental area by 80 percent.

Sterile male mosquitoes are bred at the Agricultural and Environmental Center in Bologna, Italy. That process begins at the time of egg laying. Mosquitoes mate in cages. Female mosquitoes regularly feed on animal blood. Because they can't produce eggs if they don't suck blood.

The eggs hatch into larvae within a week, then pupae or pupae. It is at this level that males and females are separated through a process called 'dimension analysis'. Male mosquitoes are much smaller in size than female mosquitoes. Because of this, they can be automatically separated based on appearance alone. The pupae are placed in water and then x-rayed.

That is why the reproductive organs show the most sensitive response. Thus the male mosquitoes become sterile for a time, but they survive. This process, however, is still reported to be very expensive. A thousand sterilized mosquitoes cost about 60 euros! That is why almost 2 lakh euros have been spent for this year's experiment.

But if the trials are successful and the process is rolled out on a larger scale, costs will come down dramatically, scientists say. "I'm almost certain that in a few years the process will become much cheaper," Eleonora Flascio added. Costs will also come down if commercial interest arises. That is, it can be said that this technology is not that expensive. If used on a large scale, the cost will also be reduced.

If this process is successful, the project can be taken further in collaboration with the World Health Organization. In particular, this researcher believes that this process can be used in countries where tiger mosquitoes are endangering people's lives.

How to prevent dengue

Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral fever. This fever is different from other viral or bacterial fevers. However, this fever is not contagious in any way. This viral fever can occur alone or in combination with other viruses (chikungunya, yellow fever, Burma forest, flu, respiratory syncytial) and bacteria (pneumococcus).

Dengue fever is divided into two categories depending on the severity of symptoms and fever.

1. Common dengue fever

2. Dengue fever with bleeding.

In the case of common dengue fever, the following symptoms are mainly seen-

1. Sudden high fever lasting 2 to 7 days.

2. Severe headache.

3. Pain behind the eyes.

4. Along with the fever, red rash appears all over the body.

5. Severe pain in whole body as well as back pain.

6. Nausea or vomiting.

7. A rash or red bumps on the skin.

In case of dengue fever with bleeding:

1. Bleeding from nose, mouth or vomiting with high fever within 2 to 48 hours.

2. Fluid accumulation in chest or abdomen along with fever.

If any of these symptoms appear, seek medical attention immediately.

On the other hand

Wait at home for the first 3 days of fever. On the other hand, sponge the whole body with water every now and then. This will reduce the level of fever. Drink enough water and rest. After that, if the fever does not decrease or if it continues to increase after some time, consult a doctor immediately.

Things to do to prevent Dengue:

1. Try to keep the surroundings of the house as clean as possible.

2. If there are flower tubs or broken plastic bottles, can shells, tires or polythene inside the house, clean them quickly and drain the accumulated water from the flower tubs.

3. Spray or fog at least 3 times a week to kill mosquitoes.

4. You can keep mosquito repellent cream with you while going out.

5. After evening, younger and older members of the household should use mosquito nets.

6. Clean up any accumulated rain water, as this is the time when Aedes mosquitoes lay their eggs.

7. On the other hand, you can use mats along with mosquito nets to avoid mosquito infestation.

8. Since Aedes mosquitoes bite during the day, it is important to avoid sleeping with mosquito nets while sleeping during the day. Source: https://dmpnews.org
