The Dhaka Times Desk The anxiety of cricket lovers across the country has put them in a great crisis. People of Bangladesh are already enough cricket lovers. Behind Bangladesh taking a big place in the world cricket is the huge enthusiasm and enthusiasm of countless fans of this country.
Nationwide outrage continues over proposals for dominance by the 'big-three' India, Australia and England. Cricket pundits are also extremely angry with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) for not taking a strong stand against the two-tier cricket proposal. The question why the test cricket that Bangladesh has been playing for 14 years will be lost in the hearts of the cricket lovers of this country has now appeared in a big way.
Yesterday, Saturday, thousands of cricket lovers formed a human chain in Shahbagh and expressed their anger against the ICC's proposal. While countrymen and former cricketers are angry, BCB Director and Media Committee Chairman Jalal Yunus made it clear yesterday that BCB will oppose any decision that goes against Bangladesh. Even though BCB has made this position clear, the country's cricket is still worried. We have to wait till the ICC meeting on January 28 and 29. Because on that day, the future of Bangladesh cricket will be finalized in the official meeting in Dubai. Whether Bangladesh will be able to play Tests in the near future will basically be determined by that. However, until this moment, Bangladesh cricket will have to go around in the circle of crisis.
It is known that according to the 'Possession Paper' proposed by the ICC, Test playing countries will be divided into two levels. It is being said that the 9th and 10th ranked countries will have to play the Continental Cup. The champions of the Continental Cup will get a chance to play against the No. 8 team. If they win the home and away series against the number 8 team, they will survive in the first tier. Then the continental cup will be played again.
How and why this happens
Currently Bangladesh's test ranking is 10, if the position paper is passed, then Bangladesh will have to play the Continental Cup. The Continental Cup will be held twice from 2015 to 2023. It is almost certain that the position of Bangladesh in the ranking will reduce the possibility of playing Tests in the near future. Bangladesh cricket will be trapped in such a great crisis. Cricket lovers of Bangladesh cannot accept this. Cricket lovers protested against this dominance of 3 countries and two-tiered cricket yesterday in Shahbagh. In such a situation, cricket lovers say, 'We have been playing Tests for the last 14 years. Now it will stop, it is not acceptable. The cricket board should think about the future of cricket in the country and take the right decision. No one should care.'
BCB Board of Directors held an emergency meeting on January 23 regarding ICC's 'Possession Paper' proposal. There was a 20-3 indirect vote in favor of the proposal. However, BCB president Nazmul Hasan Papon did not say anything about the support. He only told the media that Bangladesh's position will be decided by discussing with other countries before the meeting. Therefore, he will go to Dubai before the meeting. Yesterday he and BCB acting CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury Sujan went to Dubai.
However, BCB media chairman Jalal Yunus said Bangladesh's position, 'Bangladesh will stand against and oppose any decision that goes against Bangladesh.'
The rest depends on what happens in the meeting on January 28 and 29. However, a vote will be required to pass this proposal. South Africa, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and West Indies have already taken a strong stand against the proposal. It is not yet clear what the situation will be if 5 countries including Bangladesh are on one side. But that will have to wait. There is no other option but to wait.
