In June 2014, the Sao Paulo Stadium in Brazil is scheduled to host several games, including the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup. Accordingly, the process of refurbishing the stadium was going on. Meanwhile, the construction authorities said they were about 94 percent complete but suddenly a portion of the stadium's gallery grandstand collapsed moments before the completion of the construction work.
After the collapse of the stadium, the fire service was able to recover three bodies while searching for more bodies from the rubble. Pictures published in the international media showed two huge grandstands built on either side of the stadium, one of them collapsed on one side. Local media reported that most of the construction workers were on their lunch break at the time of the collapse, resulting in fewer casualties.
On the other hand, the time of delivering the stadium to FIFA for the 2014 FIFA World Cup is very close, so no one can say whether it will be possible to finish the entire construction of the stadium on time.
Brazil is currently carrying out massive construction projects in their country to host the upcoming FIFA World Cup and Olympics, but the Brazilian government is also struggling with issues such as domestic terrorism, insurgency, anti-World Cup crowd movements and local corruption.
After the incident, FIFA President Sref Blatter expressed deep grief over the incident and prayed for the peace of the souls of the victims.
