It appears that there have been frequent outbreaks of avian influenza over the past few years. The recent outbreak of this virus has caused considerable damage to the poultry sector. Taking these issues into consideration, vaccines are being imported officially for the first time. These vaccines will be administered in experimentally infected poultry farms. Three types of vaccines will be introduced. A high-level meeting will be held next week to finalize the decision in this regard. Earlier, the bird flu vaccines were smuggled in.
Fisheries and Livestock Minister Abdul Latif Biswas said that a policy decision has been taken regarding the import of vaccines. These vaccines will be imported officially for the first time. Preparations are underway to apply these vaccines experimentally. He said that there are precautionary measures so that the impact of these vaccines does not fall on the environment. He claims that these vaccines have no side effects. But experts say, bird-flu bacteria can change its nature at any time. Therefore, the type of bacteria must be checked before using the vaccine. Otherwise, the benefits of using the vaccine will not be obtained. Experts also suggested using the experience and strategies of countries that have been successful in using vaccines.
Note that in 2007, there was an outbreak of avian influenza in the poultry farm of Biman in Savar. After that, when the infection of this germ appeared in different parts of the country, the matter came to everyone's attention. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations (FAO) link on the Department of Livestock's webpage provides information on highly pathogenic avian influenza virus infections in only 21 commercial farms in 2012. According to FAO data, a total of 550 cases of avian influenza virus infection have been reported from 2007 to April this year, including 493 commercial and 57 backyard farms. According to private estimates, only in the 2007-2008 infection, there was a loss of about four and a half thousand crores of taka and the amount of this loss till this year is seven thousand crores of taka.
According to the Breeders Association of Bangladesh (BAB), more than 50 percent of layer farms, 70 percent of breeder farms and hatcheries, and 45 percent of broiler farms were closed in recent times. Out of 3.366 thousand parent stock (PS) more than 20 lakh PS and more than 50 percent of laying hens died. The production of day-old chicks is also reduced by half. As a result, the prices of eggs and chickens in the market increased abnormally.
