Habibur Rahman's father was a divisional leader of the National War Front during World War II. The West Bengal government arrested him in December 1947 and sent him to Baharampur Jail. However, Zahiruddin Biswas was released after a few days. After the partition of India in 1948, Zahiruddin Biswas left Mushirdabad and moved to Rajshahi and settled permanently. Habibur Rahman's mother Gul Habiba was a housewife.

He received BA in history from Dhaka University in 1949. Honors and M.A. in 1951. passed Then he received BA in Modern History from Oxford University in 1958. Received honors and bachelor's degree.
