Legendary fiction writer Humayun Ahmed is no more

Dhaka Times Desk The country's famous writer Humayun Ahmed is no more. He died at 11:30 PM Bangladesh time in Bellevue Hospital in the United States while undergoing treatment due to incurable cancer (Innalillahi: Rajiun).

After the news of his death spread, a shadow of mourning fell across the country. TV channels stopped their regular programs and started airing special programs on Humayun Ahmed. The TV channels of the country continued to air Humayun Ahmed's latest interview. Poets, writers and well-wishers came and commemorated Humayun Ahmed on TV channels.

President Zillur Rahman, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and opposition leader Khaleda Zia expressed deep grief over the death of Nandit. Humayun Ahmed, a popular writer of Bengali literature, was 64 years old. He was born in 1948 in Netrakona district. With his wife Meher Afroz Shawon, younger brother Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, friend Mazharul Islam. Momen was also in the hospital when he died.

After going to the US for cancer treatment, Ekushey Medalist Humayun was appointed by the government as an adviser to the Bangladesh Mission to the United Nations. On July 18, the doctors informed that Humayun is on the brink of death. Finally, he passed away on July 19 at 11:30 pm Bangladesh time.

It is to be noted that Humayun Ahmed went to New York for treatment on September 14 last year after being diagnosed with colon cancer. There he started receiving treatment at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. After taking a total of 12 chemo therapies in two phases, on June 12, the head of the oncology department of Bellevue Hospital. Humayun Ahmed underwent surgery under the leadership of Jain and cancer surgeon Judge Miller.

The writer returned home on June 19 after the surgery. He was renting a flat in Queens with his wife Shawn and children. After returning home, his condition worsened and he was taken to Bellevue Hospital again. He underwent a second surgery on June 21. After that, he was in the intensive care unit of the hospital for the last few days. Humayun came to the country on May 11 to spend time with family, relatives and friends before the surgery. He spent the entire time of his 20-day stay in the country in his own Nuhash village in Gazipur.

Literary critics say that Humayun perfectly brought out the muted romanticism of middle-class life in his mainly dialogue-driven novels. Poet Shamsur Rahman wrote about him, 'Many excellent works are very popular. Humayun Ahmed freed us from cheap fourth-rate writers.'
After the novel, Humayun started writing plays. This chemistry teacher of Dhaka University quit teaching because he got busy with this.

He reached the peak of popularity with 'Eisab Dinratri' aired on Bangladesh Television in the 80s. After that, popular dramas like Bahubrihi, Ayomoy, Kaa Ke Kei Nei, Nakshatra Night also came from his hands.
At one stage of writing plays, Humayun also directed. After directing dramas, he turned his hand to directing films. Starting with Agun Parshamani, he made films like Shravanamegher Din, Doi Duari, Chandrakatha, Shyamalchaya. Liberation War-based Agun Parshamani received National Film Awards in several categories.
Humayun was born in Qutubpur village of Mohanganj, Netrakona, in Nanabari, nicknamed Kajal. His father police officer Faizur Rahman martyred in the war of liberation, mother Ayesha Faiz.

There was some tension in the personal life of this famous writer. She first married Gultekin in 1973. Their three children are Nova, Sheela and Bipasha. After breaking up with Gultekin in 2005, she married Shawn. This couple has two children Nishad and Nineet.
