The tunnel was discovered last Sunday. There is no way to understand from the outside that a twenty-two foot tunnel has gone down into the bank vault. For three days this tunnel of Rathkhala in Kishoreganj was at the center of discussion. People were pouring in. Since the Hadis fair of the tunnel, numerous men and women flocked to the spot from early morning till late night hoping to catch a glimpse. Concerned about security, the authorities have cordoned off the area since the incident. In spite of this, many people came to take a look at the recommendations of political parties.
The bank authorities have closed the tunnel with the permission of the court on Tuesday afternoon after the investigation and collection of evidence by various teams of security forces for the last three days. Even though the tunnel filling work is over, the enthusiasm of the people has not waned. Many curious people are seen standing in front of the bank till late night.
Sohel, a resident of Patuakhali, rented his house in Hossainpur Upazila of Kishoreganj, keeping his name and identity secret. Since then, he gradually built the tunnel from his house to the vault of Sonali Bank. Wood and bamboo have been used to prevent the top soil from collapsing.
It should be noted that Habibur Rahman alias Sohail, the owner of the theft of Tk 16 crore 40 lakh, built this novel tunnel during the last two years. Two years ago, Sohail rented a room in the house of late language soldier Aminul Haque next to the main branch of Sonali Bank in Rathkhala area of the district town. The main purpose of which was bank robbery. He was caught by RAB yesterday after looting 16 and a half crore rupees in cinema style.
