Dhaka Times Desk Journalist leaders have announced that after Eid, if the mystery of the murder of journalist couple Sagar Sarwar and Mehrun Runi is not revealed and the killers are not arrested, they will form a nationwide movement after Eid.
At the same time, the journalist leaders commented on the 'traitors' of the journalists who are participating in various programs including the talk shows of ATN Bangla and ATN News and said that those who disobey our call and participate in those two TV talk shows will be boycotted and declared undesirable. They said that only after Mahfuzur Rahman tried to portray the character of Sagar-Rooney in his speech in London, the journalist society demanded the trial of Mahfuzur Rahman. Before that, no statement was given in this regard.
Journalist leaders said these things in a human chain and protest rally in front of the National Press Club recently demanding justice for the murder of all journalists including Sagar-Runi, ensuring the safety of journalists while performing their professional duties, stopping torture of journalists and establishing a free and independent media. The program was organized by Bangladesh Federal Journalists Union, Dhaka Journalists Union, National Press Club, Dhaka Reporters Unity and Bangladesh Crime Reporters Association. Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) general secretary and Yugantar's special representative Sajjad Alam Khan Tapu presented the protest rally.
President of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury said in the speech of the president in the rally that our movement is not against any government, this movement is for the stop of torture on journalists and their safety. Journalists who will betray this mass movement and try to crack our unity, they will be condemned in the journalism society and will be thrown into the grip of history. We will hold discussion meetings at various levels during the month of Ramadan to demand the arrest of Sagar-Runi's killers. Strict movement will be announced after Eid. He said, I want to see the similarity of Mahfuzur Rahman's words and deeds. It will be reflected in the two channels it owns.
President of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists Ruhul Amin Gazi said that the mobile set of the janitor of the deceased Sagar-Runi's house was found with the DB official's brother. He urged the IGP to investigate the matter and take strict action against the police officer. Criticizing the role of the two editors who ignored the calls of journalists and went to various events of ATN Bengal, he said, "We will boycott them if necessary."
Omar Farooq, president of Dhaka Journalist Union, said that the journalist community had not said anything about ATN Bangla Chairman Mahfuzur Rahman. Journalists demanded his arrest and trial after he first made offensive comments about Rooney's character in London and claimed he had evidence of the murder. He said, he warned those who are trying to broker for Mahfuzur Rahman.
President of Dhaka Reporters Unity Sakhawat Hossain Badsha said, are murderers more powerful than journalists? After Ramadan, the movement will add a different dimension. General Secretary of Dhaka Journalist Union Shaban Mahmud said, we have given memorandum to the President and Prime Minister. But the killers are so powerful that they are not being arrested. He also threatened to keep the current and former editors of the two newspapers participating in the foundation anniversary of ATN Bangla in the same room.
It is to be noted that Sagar Sarwar, news editor of Machranga Television and Mehrun Rooney, senior reporter of ATN Bangla, were killed at their residence in Rajabazar on February 11. Initially, the case was investigated by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, but now the RAB is investigating.
But even after 6 long months, no one has been arrested yet. Even the police could not unravel the mystery of the murder. If the murder of two established journalists of electronic media is not prosecuted, then how will the common people of the country be prosecuted?
It is a natural rule that law will run at its own pace. But if the path is so slow, then where will the people of the country go? Journalists always write 'the word of justice weeps silently', as if this sentence has become useless today.
