The Dhaka Times Desk Even though there are animal slaughter policies across the country, including the capital Dhaka, cows and goats are being slaughtered outside the policy due to which there is considerable doubt about the quality of the meat. What are we eating in the name of meat? Everyone is aware of this question.
Animal slaughter rules
# Animal Slaughter and Meat Inspection Policy of the Ministry of Livestock states that slaughterhouses should have sheds for keeping animals.
# The shed should be air-conditioned and hung and covered with cowhide so as not to touch the ground.
# will be taken for slaughter only after keeping the animal for at least three days and passing the medical examination certificate.
# cannot be skinned with knife, must use pulling chain.
# After slaughter, the meat should be refrigerated for eight to 24 hours to allow the fat coating to form on the meat. It will keep the meat sterile.
# Before packing in processing room Veterinary surgeon will give certificate after other tests including poisons and antibiotics whether it is marketable or not.
If the # is suitable for marketing, sealman will offer separate seals for cattle, buffalo, goat, sheep.
# City Corporation charge Rs.50 for cow, Rs.75 for buffalo, Rs.10 for goat/sheep.
# Each slaughterhouse shall have one veterinary doctor, master, inspector, sealman and cleaner for eight hours per shift.
Only healthy meat can be obtained by slaughtering animals in this way. It is known that the lessee of the slaughter slab took the lease by following the terms of this policy.
What does the law say?
The Animal Slaughter and Meat Quality Control Bill was passed on August 24, 2011, making it a punishable offense to slaughter animals outside government-approved slaughterhouses and without permission from the appropriate government authorities. According to this bill, no person or institution can slaughter animals outside the slaughterhouse for commercial purposes. Violators will be prosecuted in accordance with the Mobile Courts Act 2009. If a person is found guilty in a trial, he will be punished with imprisonment for a term not exceeding one year without labor or with a minimum fine of five thousand and not exceeding 25 thousand rupees or with both.
Even two years ago, we saw the horrible picture of the slaughterhouses during the ground investigation. Now it can be seen that the situation has not improved, but has worsened.
Mohammadpur Agricultural Market
A recent visit to the Mohammadpur Agricultural Market saw four buffaloes tied up in a long damp room next to fifty small sickly cows. Three cows lie dead upright on the floor. A youth and a teenager entered the house and tied all the legs of a buffalo. The young man then pushed the buffalo down and slaughtered it alone with a small knife. No prayer was heard. The knife went on for quite some time. The buffalo's torso was still shaking. In the meantime, the young slaughterer began to skin. Within five minutes, another young man entered with a bucket and a knife. Thin face, eyes droopy with sleep. The young man saw a cow lying on the floor. The cow does not respond. This time the cow's ears moved as soon as a bucket of water was sprinkled. Now the dead cow's head was dragged to the side of the drain. Then a small knife was pressed on the neck with one foot and driven 10 times into the cow's neck. This time too no prayers were seen or heard. A few blows are given to skin the cow within seconds. Within five minutes another dead cow was slaughtered in the same manner by the young butcher.
This is how the animal slaughtering started in Dhaka City Corporation's animal slaughter slab (slaughter house) in the new raw market area of the capital's Mohammadpur agricultural market. Until 7 o'clock in the morning, the appointed doctor of the City Corporation, Mullah, Silman or the cleaner did not appear!
The name of the young man who slaughtered the dead cows one after another is Arshad. Lives in Geneva Camp area. He has been slaughtering cows for seven years. Arshad said that he was slaughtering the cows of Guddu, a meat trader in the agricultural market. 300 rupees for one night work. Market traders Munna, Guddu, Qayyum, Parvez and Ghulam Mostafar gathered the cows and buffaloes for slaughter. Arshad claimed that the cows were fine after being brought two days ago. Saturday suddenly fell ill. Arshad asked if there is a master and a doctor in the slaughterhouse and said, I am hearing. did not see Arshad said, "Bismillah, Allahu Akbar" when asked about the slaughter without reading the prayer. And I poached twice.
This is how the slaughtering of animals is going on in all the slaughterhouses of the capital. Although there is a concerned sanitary officer of the city corporation, it seems that there is no one to watch. He is slaughtering and selling animals as he pleases. It is also heard that the concerned officials are releasing Khasir on Sagi. This happens because of the good relationship with the butchers, said one on condition of anonymity.
We hope the authorities concerned will take necessary action. and see to it that meat is slaughtered and sold in accordance with sanitary and religious regulations.
