The Dhaka Times Desk Nathan Han, a 15-year-old student, won the first prize in this year's competition of the International Science and Engineering Fair. This student has developed a software to detect mutation genes to detect breast cancer.
With reference to Intel, it is known that the International Science and Engineering Fair is organized by the Intel company every year. It is said to be the world's largest school-based science competition. Every year around 7 million school students from different parts of the world participate in this competition with their original inventions. Out of this very few contestants are selected for the final stage of this competition.
Nathan Hahn has developed software that collects data from public databases. It will then match the characteristic state of the gene mutation responsible for the tumor and show whether the patient has cancer. That is, in simple words, cancer can be detected through this Han software. Intel was awarded this year's IESF's Gordon E. More Award for this discovery. The monetary value of this prize is 75000 USD.
This science, math and engineering fair is organized in collaboration with the Intel Young Foundation for Scientists. For almost a week, students from different places around the world presented their basic research topics. This year around 1700 students exhibited their research works. From there the research work of 500 students is selected for the final stage. Awards are given in recognition of best work in about 17 categories. These basic studies are tested by 1200 scientists.
