The Dhaka Times Desk The long-running rivalry between Apple and Samsung is going to end. They are going to settle all ongoing cases in all countries other than the United States. For this reason, these two large technology product manufacturers have agreed to sign a joint agreement.
The story of the rivalry between these two giants began in 2011. Apple sued Samsung in US court for patent infringement. The lawsuit alleges that Samsung is making Galaxy series products by copying iPhone and iPad. Besides, they are also duplicating the 'slide to unlock' feature. After Apple's lawsuit, Samsung also sued Apple for patent infringement in various countries' courts. They allege that Apple is copying photo synchronization, music and video file transfer features between different products. As a result of the counter-suits, the two institutions have been enmity ever since.
Although the cases are going on in nine countries of the world, the cases made in various courts of the United States are the main ones. Two cases in the US have been ruled in Apple's favor so far. In May of this year, Samsung was fined $119.6 million for infringing two of Apple's patents. In this case, Apple demanded 2.2 billion US dollars in damages. In the ruling, the court accused Apple of infringing a Samsung patent. For this, Apple was fined one hundred and fifty eight thousand dollars. Samsung is seeking $6 million in damages for allegedly infringing two other patents Apple claims. In another case in 2012, the court declared Apple a winner and fined Samsung $105 million. Samsung is still pursuing the case.
Apple and Samsung are currently suing each other for patent infringement in nine countries outside the United States, including the United Kingdom, South Korea, Japan and Germany. Apple won the case in some countries and Samsung in some countries. But no one clearly won. The cases have been going on for more than three years. But no permanent solution came.
Rafa is finally going to happen. The case will continue only in the United States. Apart from this, all cases against each other in other countries of the world will be settled. They also agreed to sign a joint agreement for this.
At present, US company Apple and South Korean company Samsung compete in the smartphone and tablet market. Both the companies have taken this decision to clear their position in the market.
