Bangladeshi scientist's discovery of solar energy butterflies: can be useful in electricity generation

The Dhaka Times Desk Now Bangladeshi scientists made a surprising discovery. That is the Solar Butterfly 'JungleGlory'. This rare solar powered butterfly was identified in the dense forest of Thanchi area of Bandarban. This butterfly can be useful in generating electricity in solar power plants.

Solar Butterfly

Everyone should remember the butterfly. Because many people ran to catch colorful butterflies as children. So can anyone ever forget the childhood spent chasing the butterfly's wings? But this time the scientists of our country are running after the butterfly. They chased the butterflies in the forest for a long time and discovered the solar energy butterfly which they named 'Jungle Glory'.

The butterfly was discovered by the professor of zoology at Jahangirnagar University. Manowar Hossain. Due to his special interest in butterflies, he has taken higher degree in butterflies. Made a butterfly garden. That's why he grabbed everyone's attention. A centuries-old solar-powered butterfly has been identified after long-term research. After 132 years, this butterfly was found in Bangladesh. The name of the butterfly is 'JungleGlory'. In English it is called 'Thaumentis Deoris'.

This year on March 30 Dr. Manwar identified this rare solar butterfly from the undergrowth of Bandarban's Thanchi area with the 'Butterfly Research Team' of a World Bank funded project.

It is known that a scientist named Doubleday first identified this butterfly in Sylhet in 1845. Then in 1882, Brigadier Marshall and Nesseville identified it for the second time from Sylhet forest. 132 years have passed since then. There is no record of its identification by any other local or foreign research team in this country for a long time.

Dr. Manwar told the media that the wing length of this butterfly is 95-115 mm. This butterfly is dark brown in color. On the upper wing two six-stripe like rays of bright dark blue color can be seen. The butterfly flies among the forest leaves and small trunks. The life cycle and other biological functions of this butterfly in Bangladesh are still unknown.

Dr. Manowar said, 'More than 300 species of butterflies have been discovered in Bangladesh so far. We have many butterflies in our country - which through discovery and research can also enrich the country by generating electricity in the country's solar power plants.'

Note that in 2009, a group of scientists from Japan and China conducted a study on solar energy with this species of butterfly. They found that the structure and color of the butterfly's wing scales could capture solar energy and generate high-power electricity from it. Which is especially helpful for their super fast flight and muscle movement. Scientists are working to commercialize the scale structure and color scheme of this butterfly's wings for use in various electrical devices and other solar power plants. Scientists have already achieved success. It can also be used in our country.
