International Criminal Tribunal verdict: Matiur Rahman Nizami sentenced to death

The Dhaka Times Desk In the case of crimes against humanity, the court ordered the hanging of Jamaat Islami Amir Matiur Rahman Nizami in the judgment of the International Criminal Tribunal. On Wednesday, the 3-member bench headed by Justice M Inayetur Rahim, Chairman of the International Criminal Tribunal-1, announced the verdict.

There are 16 specific charges against Matiur Rahman Nizami like killing, looting, rape, incitement and aiding and abetting, planning and conspiracy during the liberation war and killing of intellectuals. His trial was started on May 28, 2012 after framing charges in these incidents.

A total of 26 witnesses, including freedom fighters, professors, journalists and historians, testified against Nizami in the tribunal from August 26, 2012 to October 8 last year. 4 people testified in this case. They are - Nizami's son Md Najibur Rahman and advocate KA Hamidur Rahman, Md Shamsul Alam and Abdus Salam Mukul.

On November 13, 2013, the judicial panel headed by Justice ATM Fazle Kabir, the then chairman of Tribunal-1, declared the case against Nizami to be closed for pronouncement of verdict (CAV) any day. Fourth judgment

Then the fourth judgment was passed on May 9. Another Jamaat's Assistant Secretary General Mohammad Kamaruzzaman was also sentenced to death by the International Criminal Tribunal.

Fifth judgment

On June 15, the tribunal sentenced Amir Ghulam Azam of the Liberation War Jamaat to 90 years on charges of conspiracy, planning and inciting crimes against humanity. This is the fifth verdict of the tribunal.

Sixth verdict

The sixth judgment was passed on July 17. In that verdict, Jamaat Secretary General Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid was also sentenced to death for crimes against humanity.

Seventh judgment

The seventh verdict of the tribunal was delivered on October 1. BNP Standing Committee Member and Member of Parliament of Chittagong Salauddin Quader Chowdhury was sentenced to death.

Eighth judgment

In the eighth verdict, the tribunal sentenced former BNP minister Abdul Alim to life imprisonment on October 9.

Ninth Judgment

In the ninth verdict, the tribunal sentenced 2 Badr leaders Ashrafuzzaman Khan and Chowdhury Muinuddin to death on November 3 for the murder of intellectuals.

Tenth judgment

Today will be the tenth verdict of the tribunal. Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Matiur Rahman Nizami was sentenced to death by the court.
