The Dhaka Times Desk In the case of crimes against humanity, the court ordered the hanging of Jamaat Islami Amir Matiur Rahman Nizami in the judgment of the International Criminal Tribunal. On Wednesday, the 3-member bench headed by Justice M Inayetur Rahim, Chairman of the International Criminal Tribunal-1, announced the verdict.
Today Wednesday at 12.20 pm, the 3-member bench led by the chairman of the International Criminal Tribunal-1, Justice M Inayetur Rahim gave the verdict. The other 2 members of the bench are - Justice Jahangir Hossain and Justice Anwarul Haque. 8 out of 16 charges against Nizami have been proved. Of these, 4 have been sentenced to death and 4 to life imprisonment.
Nizami was brought to Dhaka Central Jail from Kashimpur Jail in Gazipur yesterday due to the verdict. Nizmi was brought to the tribunal at 9:25 am on Wednesday.
Today's verdict is the tenth verdict in the crime against humanity case. In the previous 9 cases, the tribunal sentenced 8 former and present Jamaat leaders and 2 BNP leaders. Before this, the tribunal did not announce the verdict as Nizami could not appear in court due to illness on June 24.
On March 24, the court declared the trial of the case against Nizami over. The tribunal then kept the case for pronouncement of verdict (CAV) on any day. Nizami's case is the only case which has been kept pending for judgment 3 times.
There are 16 specific charges against Matiur Rahman Nizami like killing, looting, rape, incitement and aiding and abetting, planning and conspiracy during the liberation war and killing of intellectuals. His trial was started on May 28, 2012 after framing charges in these incidents.
A total of 26 witnesses, including freedom fighters, professors, journalists and historians, testified against Nizami in the tribunal from August 26, 2012 to October 8 last year. 4 people testified in this case. They are - Nizami's son Md Najibur Rahman and advocate KA Hamidur Rahman, Md Shamsul Alam and Abdus Salam Mukul.
On November 13, 2013, the judicial panel headed by Justice ATM Fazle Kabir, the then chairman of Tribunal-1, declared the case against Nizami to be closed for pronouncement of verdict (CAV) any day. Then the Chairman of Tribunal-1 Justice ATM Fazle Kabir retired on December 31 last year due to the completion of the service age limit. Supreme Court Justice M. as Chairman of Tribunal-1. 10 Judgment of the Tribunal
The current government established the International Criminal Tribunal on March 25, 2010 after coming to power. This marked the start of the much awaited war crimes trial.
First judgment
In the first verdict, on January 21, 2013, former Jamaat-e-Islami leader Abul Kalam Azad alias Bachchu Razakar was ordered to be hanged.
Second judgment
Another assistant secretary general of Jamaat-e-Islami, Abdul Quader Mollah, was sentenced to life imprisonment in a second verdict on February 5. Rejecting this verdict, thousands of ordinary people took a stand at Shahbagh in the capital. Ganajagaran stage was created.
When the movement spread across the country demanding maximum punishment for war criminals, the government amended the Tribunal Act in the face of public demand. After that, both sides have equal opportunity to appeal against the verdict. On September 17, the Appellate Division sentenced Quader Molla to death in the final judgment of this case.
Third judgment
The third verdict of the tribunal was given on February 28. Jamaat-e-Islami carried out massive violence when Jamaat's Naib Amir Delawar Hossain Saeedee was hanged in that verdict. More than 70 people including the police were killed as government officials.
Fourth judgment
Then the fourth judgment was passed on May 9. Another Jamaat's Assistant Secretary General Mohammad Kamaruzzaman was also sentenced to death by the International Criminal Tribunal.
Fifth judgment
On June 15, the tribunal sentenced Amir Ghulam Azam of the Liberation War Jamaat to 90 years on charges of conspiracy, planning and inciting crimes against humanity. This is the fifth verdict of the tribunal.
Sixth verdict
The sixth judgment was passed on July 17. In that verdict, Jamaat Secretary General Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid was also sentenced to death for crimes against humanity.
Seventh judgment
The seventh verdict of the tribunal was delivered on October 1. BNP Standing Committee Member and Member of Parliament of Chittagong Salauddin Quader Chowdhury was sentenced to death.
Eighth judgment
In the eighth verdict, the tribunal sentenced former BNP minister Abdul Alim to life imprisonment on October 9.
Ninth Judgment
In the ninth verdict, the tribunal sentenced 2 Badr leaders Ashrafuzzaman Khan and Chowdhury Muinuddin to death on November 3 for the murder of intellectuals.
Tenth judgment
Today will be the tenth verdict of the tribunal. Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Matiur Rahman Nizami was sentenced to death by the court.
