The Dhaka Times Desk The 72-hour hartal called by Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh started at 6 am today. However, no untoward incident has been reported so far.
Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Matiur Rahman Nizami was ordered to be hanged by the International Criminal Tribunal-1 yesterday for crimes against humanity. In protest, the organization has called for a 24-hour strike from today to 6 a.m. on Friday and a total of 72 hours from 6 a.m. on Sunday to 6 a.m. on Tuesday.
The police arrested Jamaat's Metropolitan Amir in Rajshahi yesterday. Leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami have been arrested in different places across the country. Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatrashibir held protests in different parts of the country. Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh also held processions at various places in the capital Dhaka. As of 8:30 am, no untoward incident has been reported.
Public transport is running in the capital. However, no long-distance bus left. The train is running. The launch was seen running at the launch ghat. The shopping malls in the capital are closed. Attendance at office-court is less. Bancassurance is open.
