The Dhaka Times Desk President Zillur Rahman is no more with us. He passed away today at 5 pm Bangladesh time (Inni…Rajiun),
Recently he fell ill and was admitted to Dhaka CMH. As his condition worsened, he was airlifted to Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore on March 11. He was being treated under close observation. He passed away today at 5 o'clock in the afternoon on March 20.
Zillur Rahman was born on March 9, 1929 in Bhairab of Kishoreganj. Active in politics since his student days, this leader also joined the Liberation War of 1971. On August 21, 2004, Zillur Rahman lost his wife, the then president of the Women's Awami League, Ivy Rahman, in a grenade attack on an Awami League rally in the capital's Bangabandhu Avenue. He has one son and two daughters.
Apart from being the founding president of Kishoreganj Awami League, Zillur Rahman was the general secretary of Awami League, a member of the presidium and held important responsibilities of the party at various times. On January 11, 2007, after the declaration of emergency, Sheikh Hasina gave Zillur Rahman the responsibility of acting president of the party.
It is to be noted that Zillur Rahman was elected Member of Parliament from Kuliarchar-Bhairab Constituency of Kishoreganj in the 1973, 1986, 1996 and 2001 National Parliament Elections including the 2008 Ninth Parliament Election. In 1970 he was elected Member of Pakistan National Assembly (MNA).
