The Dhaka Times Desk Jamaat Naib Amir Delawar Hossain Saeedee, who was sentenced to death for crimes against humanity, applied for bail. In 2010, he applied for bail in the International Criminal Tribunal-1 in two war crime cases filed in Sadar and Jianagar police stations of Pirojpur.
On Wednesday, the application was made on behalf of Sayeedi by his lawyer Advocate Mizanul Islam. A 3-member tribunal headed by Chairman Justice ATM Fazle Kabir has fixed the date of hearing and passing the order on Thursday.
The bail plea said that since the tribunal had pronounced death sentence against Saeedee in a similar crime case, no other similar case could proceed. Therefore, the two cases filed earlier in Pirojpur's Sadar and Jianagar police stations cannot continue. So he needs to be bailed.
Notably, the first state witness Mahabub Alam Howladar and the 6th witness Manik Pasari filed two criminal law cases against Saeedee in Sadar and Jianagar police stations of Pirojpur in 2009 respectively.
Later, when the International Criminal Tribunal was formed, the judicial process of crimes against humanity started with Saeedee's case. Mahabub Alam Howladar was also the plaintiff in Saeedi's case (No: 01/2011) which was completed in the tribunal.
On February 28, the International Criminal Tribunal-1 sentenced Saeedee to death by hanging in the case of crimes against humanity. The tribunal announced this verdict as 8 of the 20 charges against Saeedee were proved beyond doubt.
Among them, Saeedee was killed in charges No. 8 and 10. In addition, the tribunal did not announce any sentence even though the charges No. 6, 7, 11, 14, 16 and 19 were proved.
Saeedi's lawyers have said that an appeal will be filed against this verdict in the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court by the end of this month, requesting that Saeedi be acquitted of all proven charges. (Courtesy: Bangladesh News24.com).
