Congress opposes Bangladesh-India land border agreement

The Dhaka Times Desk This time, Congress is opposing the Bangladesh-India land border agreement. Due to which the implementation of Bangladesh-India land border agreement is getting delayed yet again.

Land Boundary Agreement

As the BJP excluded Assam from the agreement, the opposition Congress has started strongly opposing the bill, according to media reports. The government had planned to introduce the bill in the Rajya Sabha on May 5 at the end of the current budget session. But after the news of exclusion of Assam, Congress started opposing it. Due to which the implementation of this agreement has become uncertain. Several states, including Trinamool-ruled West Bengal, are included in the bill, while Congress-ruled Assam is excluded.

The state BJP leadership has been insisting on keeping Assam out of the land border agreement to gain political leverage in the Assam assembly elections early next year. The Hindu nationalist BJP, on the other hand, sees the land swap with Bangladesh as a visible defeat. And the Congress says that Assam should be included in the constitutional amendment. India has included the states of Assam, West Bengal, Tripura and Meghalaya in the Bangladesh-India Land Border Agreement.

It is to be noted that the agreement reached between Bangladesh and India after long negotiations requires Bangladesh to give up 268 acres of land in Assam. The Land Border Agreement was signed in September 2011 during the then Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh's visit to Bangladesh. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi joined the visit.
