The bomb attack was carried out late at night in the Hosni Dalan area of Old Dhaka in the capital. A teenager was killed. At least 100 were injured. Among the injured, 57 are under treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, 17 at Mitford Hospital and 16 at a private hospital in Moghbazar.
Eyewitnesses told the media that the bomb attack took place on Friday at half past two. Plainclothes security personnel were deployed at this time along with uniformed police for security. The name of the teenager killed in the bomb attack is Sajjad Hossain. He died before being taken to the hospital.
Eyewitnesses said that preparations were being made for a Tajiya procession at the main gate of Hosni Dalan from 1:30 am. The procession was supposed to go to Paltan in the morning. Young, old, women and even children came to join the procession. Suddenly around 2:30 am, the entire area was shaken by the sound of Muhurmuhu explosion. Someone said they heard 10/15 explosions in a row. Many fell to the ground during the explosion. Keoba sprang to his feet as he ran again. The entire area became heavy with cries and screams. Residents of the surrounding areas continued to take the injured to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Mitford Hospital and nearby private hospitals using motorcycles, auto rickshaws and vans as best they could.
It is to be noted that many people from different parts of the city came to Hosni Dalan in Old Dhaka to participate in the Tajiya procession on the occasion of Ashura. Most of them belong to the Shia community. The day of the martyrdom of Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) Imam Hussain (RA) is commemorated and celebrated by the people of the Shia community as a symbol of sacrifice and mourning.
