The Dhaka Times Desk A fire broke out at the Tunghai sweater manufacturing factory in Gabtali technical area of the capital on Wednesday at 11 pm. After trying for about two hours, 13 units of the fire brigade brought the fire under control at around 1 am. It was immediately known that the fire started from one floor of this 12-storey factory. The fire spread to the third floor. The fire brigade quickly reached the spot after receiving the information. The factory was closed when the fire broke out.
In this incident, 8 people including Managing Director (MD) Mahabubur Rahman and DIG of Police ZM Manjur Morshed were killed. Four of the dead have been identified. They are DIG of Police ZM Manjur Morshed, Managing Director of the factory Mahbubur Rahman, President of Comilla District Jubo League and close friend of MD Sohel Mostafa Swapan and another friend of MD Emadur Rahman Badal. The bodies of these four people have been kept at the National Heart Institute Hospital. A doctor in charge of the emergency department of the Heart Institute said that a total of 5 people were brought to the hospital. 4 people including MD and DIG died before being brought. Another person has been placed in intensive care. The identity of the other two was not known. The body of one of them is in Square Hospital in Kalabagan and the other in Bardem Hospital in Shahbagh.
BGMEA President Atiqul Islam went to the spot around 12:30 pm. At that time he said, "We heard that 5 to 6 people including the owner are trapped. They cannot be contacted by phone.”
He further said, “The factory was closed. The cause of the fire seems to be mysterious for now. We will look into the matter."
Director of Fire Service and Civil Defense (Operation and Management) Major Mohammad Mahbub said, "On the one hand, we brought the fire under control. 13 units worked here.” Factory security officer Borhan Uddin told Banglanews that the factory was closed when the fire broke out. Wirelink work was going on in the godown after the factory closed in the evening. The fire may have started from here.
The rescue workers said that the victims were rescued from the sixth, seventh or 10th floor of the factory. At that time they were lying on the stairs of those floors. Many of them have blackened faces and burst eyes. First, Malik Mahbubur Rahman and another person were rescued at 12:49. After that, others were rescued in stages.
