The Dhaka Times Desk Sadiq Khan of Pakistani origin was elected the first Muslim mayor of London. He defeated incumbent Conservative Party candidate Jack Goldsmith by 9 percent of the vote.
The results released last Friday showed that Sadiq Khan, the candidate of the opposition Labor Party, won eight of the 14 London Assembly seats by a wide margin. He got 56.8 percent votes. His nearest rival Jack received 43.2 percent of the vote. Sadiq Khan's victory ended the Conservative Party's eight-year reign at City Hall.
Sadiq Khan became the first mayor not only of London but also of a European capital. Sadiq Khan's father was a bus driver. He came to Britain as an immigrant from Pakistan. Before joining Labor Party politics, Sadiq Khan worked as a human rights lawyer.
In his reaction after the election results were announced, Sadiq Khan said that he never dreamed that someone like him could be elected Mayor of London.
