Last week, an agitated group of about 200 Buddhists rioted in a Muslim village in Bago province. During this time they destroyed a mosque.
Local police chief Won Lin said the situation there was still tense on Saturday. Around 100 policemen have been deployed to keep the situation calm.
He also said that 50 policemen had patrolled the village on Friday night after rumors spread that the situation in the village might turn chaotic. However, no one has been arrested yet for their alleged involvement in the destruction of the mosque.
The secretary of that mosque, Win Shaw, told the media that Muslim residents are now living in the area in a panic. They plan to move to a neighboring town until the tension calms down.
