Recently, Nigerian customs officials seized 102 bags of fake rice. It contains plastic rice-like lumps! The businessman planned to ship the rice within the country and sell it during Christmas.
According to media reports, the price of rice has been increasing every month in West African countries due to inflation for almost a year. What was the price of a bag of rice last December, it has now become almost double. That's why common people are struggling to get even simple food. In this opportunity, some unscrupulous traders are trying to sell these dangerous products of inferior quality at low prices as a shortcut to earn money.
Lagos Customs Chief Haruna Mamudu said their officers seized a total of 2.55 tonnes of rice. The brand name of rice was “Best Tomato Rice”. It also had no manufacturing date. Officials boiled this rice and found that it was not the same as rice. That is why this rice is sent to the laboratory for testing.
The Guardian quoted Mamudur as saying: “We have analyzed this move at an early stage. After cooking it becomes sticky, God only knows what happens if people eat this rice!”
However, the customs officials still did not know where this rice was actually made. However, China has a reputation for counterfeiting food products. That's why many are pointing fingers at China.
The scandal of melamine in milk in 2008 is known to all. In 2011, a Korea Times report said that fake rice was produced in China. According to this report, potato, sweet potato and plastic are used in making this rice. This rice is sold a lot in the Chinese market!
