Pakistani human rights activist Malala Yousafzai, who won the Nobel Peace Prize, sought the international community's intervention to protect the Rohingya minority in Myanmar. Malala also called on Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi to speak for the Rohingya.
Malala Yousafzai told the BBC about the Rohingya crisis, "Millions of people have been displaced. We cannot remain silent now." Human rights activist Malala also called for an international response to the violence in Myanmar.
Malala, an Oxford student, also called on Myanmar to recognize the Rohingya as citizens.
Malala said, “This is a matter of human rights. Governments need to respond to this. People today are being displaced, victims of violence. Children are being deprived of education, they are not getting basic rights. It has become very difficult to survive in a situation where terrorism and violence prevail”.
It should be noted that after the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army attacked the police checkpoint and army camp in Rakhine in Myanmar on August 24, Rohingya Muslims started leaving the country in the face of counter-military operations there. According to UN estimates, about 146,000 Rohingya have fled Myanmar and entered Bangladesh as of last Wednesday.
