The Dhaka Times Desk Britain's Glasgow City Council is taking away the 'Freedom of the City' title given to Myanmar's de facto leader Suu Kyi! It has already voted unanimously to withdraw the honor given to Aung San Suu Kyi.
Britain's Glasgow City Council has voted unanimously to revoke the honor given to Myanmar's de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi, media reports said.
The relevant authorities have decided to withdraw the title of 'Freedom of City' as a protest against the killing of Rohingyas by the army in Myanmar's Rakhine, violation of human rights in torture and Ms Suu Kyi's response to this incident.
It is known that Suu Kyi was given this title by Glasgow City Council in 2009 when she was in exile at her residence in Myanmar.
Glasgow's Lord Provost Eva Bolander said she and city councilor Miz Suchi had written a letter expressing concern about atrocities against Rohingya in Rakhine and calling for action.
"The response we've seen from him is disappointing and sad." He described the taking back of the title as unprecedented.
More than 600,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled to Bangladesh to save their lives since Myanmar's army started killing and persecuting them in August.
There have also been calls for the University of Glasgow to withdraw the honorary degree awarded to Suu Kyi. However, the university authorities said that the chances of that happening are very low.
Just days earlier, another British city, Sheffield, also decided to revoke Suu Kyi's 'Freedom of the City' title for allegedly showing 'willful indifference' to the Rohingya issue.
Sheffield councilor Soraya Siddiqui said that if we continue to honor Suu Kyi, our city's reputation will be called into question.
