The main reason for high data usage in WhatsApp is that the images or videos exchanged in these apps are automatically downloaded to the user's mobile phone. That is why more internet data is consumed by the user. But you can turn off this option if you want. This will save your internet data.
How to do it
First launch the app and login. Then click on the 3 dots icon on the top right side of the app and go to the settings option. Then click on the 'data and storage usage' option when the settings option opens.
Then a new page will open. From there click on 'media auto-download' to 'when using mobile data' and uncheck all the options. Then click on 'ok' button. Do the same in the 'when roaming' option.
While exchanging messages on WhatsApp, you can turn on the option to auto download documents, images and videos only on WiFi internet connection.
If you are using limited internet connection then you can turn off the auto download by going to 'When connected on Wi-Fi' option. Then you don't have to worry so much about data consumption.
