The Dhaka Times Desk Green Bee-eater (English: Green Bee-eater; scientific name: Merops Orientalis) is a small bird found in Bangladesh. In some parts of the country it is also called as 'Swichora', 'Narun Chera' etc. This bird belonging to the Meropidae family lives in groups in the riverside forests. 'Truu Triu' calls out sharply. Its English name is Green Bee-eater. However, it is primarily a fish-eating bird, though it preys on insects.

Description:
They are shriveled green bamboo shoots about 8 inches long. Their color is bright green. However, there are golden feathers on the upper part of the head and back. The underside of the wing is bright copper. Its black beak is slightly curved. The 'kajalrekha' is on either side of the eye which merges with the neck. The bird has a blue stripe near its chin and throat and a black band like a garland under its throat. Its legs are black in color. Note that the two feathers along the middle of the green bamboo's tail are extended by two inches.
Bamboos do not know how to build nests in trees. They build nests by making holes in steep places at the banks of rivers. During the breeding season, the female lays 5 to 7 pale white eggs deep in the burrow. Both male and female birds lay eggs together. Hatching takes 21 to 27 days.
