The African country of Mauritania had success using drone technology in the fight against locusts earlier this year. This time, Kenya is going to use drones to protect agricultural land. The drones that the country is going to use will also have cameras and mapping sensors. The movement of locusts will be monitored first through these cameras. Secondly, drones equipped with atomizers will spray pesticides on land, which is expected to play a major role in controlling locusts.
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is encouraging the country in this regard. The company said it wants to test quadcopters and drones against locusts. Drones, in particular, are expected to rapidly drive away locusts from large farmlands. Keith Cressman, a senior FAO official, said, "We are still testing different types of drones and finding the most suitable locust control techniques."
It is known that this danger is coming towards Bangladesh as well. A report in India's Hindu newspaper said that a swarm of locusts may have crossed the Indian Ocean and landed on the farmlands of peninsular India. Only then will it go to Bangladesh. Analysts say that if drone technology is successful in Africa, it could be used in South Asia as well. Which will be a major milestone in food security in the region.
Note that according to botanists, this locust is known as English Locust. In Bengali it is called patanga, it can also be called a kind of grasshopper. Typically, each swarm may contain several hundred thousand to one billion moths! Then it is called a locust. When locusts invade a crop field, it can be a real nightmare for a farmer.
