10 million children in the world will not return to school even if the pandemic is over

The Dhaka Times Desk Nearly 9.7 million children around the world will never return to school due to the deadly coronavirus pandemic. British-based NGO Save the Children gave this information in a report published on Monday.

Citing UNESCO data, Save the Children says that 1.6 billion children worldwide are out of school and college as of last April. That means almost 90 percent of students have been affected by Covid-19.

Poor countries around the world are cutting spending on education to deal with the deadly coronavirus situation. That money will be spent in other sectors. Because of this, about 9.7 million children will never see the face of school again. Along with that, 9 to 12 crore children's families will also become poor.

According to Save the Children, there is an unprecedented emergency in education. The condition of 12 countries in the world is the worst. The rest of the poor or middle-income countries are not faring too well.

According to the organization's calculations, due to the epidemic, those countries will cut 7 thousand 7 billion dollars in the education sector. Which will affect about one crore children. School will disappear from their lives. The 12 worst performing countries are Pakistan, Afghanistan, Niger, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Yemen, Guinea, Mauritania, Chad and Liberia.

The report also says that for the first time in human history, the education system of an entire generation of children around the world has suffered. So the main slogan or title of the organization's report is 'Save our education'. 9 to 11.7 million children will become poorer. That's why they won't be in school anymore. They are forced to start working to support the family. Being poor will also increase the tendency of girls to be married off quickly. Those families will not have the ability to educate their children. Due to which about 1 crore children will not see the face of school anymore.

According to the nearly 94-page report, girls may fare worse than boys. Gender inequality will also increase. The trend of marrying off girls as children will also increase. Because of which they will be forced to get pregnant at a young age. Maternal mortality will increase as before.

Save the Children also says that between now and the end of 2021, low- and middle-income countries will cut $77 billion in education spending. In the worst-case scenario, this budget cut could reach $19,000 billion by the end of 2021.
