The Dhaka Times Desk What can survive without the heart? From a normal point of view the answer is 'no' but this impossible has been made possible by a young man in the United States. Before turning 25, he surprised the world by surviving for more than a year (555 days) without a heart.
Stan Larkin's survival story is an inspiration to medical experts. Even this time the young man was able to play light sports with friends!
About the year 2016. Stan Larkin got a new heart at the age of 25. Before that, however, she carried a small device called the SyncArcadia device on her back until she found a donor. He carried this device which works like an artificial heart on his back for 555 days.
The SyncArcadia device is used as a temporary heart after bilateral heart failure and when conventional heart support devices are not able to save the patient. Stan Larkin left the hospital and decided to get the 13.5-pound portable device.
At a 2016 press conference at the University of Michigan's Franknell Cardiovascular Center, Stan Larkin said, 'It (the SyncArcadia device) gave me my life back and kept me healthy.'
Stan Larkin is not the only family member with heart problems. His older brother Dominic had cardiomyopathy. In this disease, the heart muscles become unable to transport blood to the body and it can lead to heart failure.
Both of their brothers were operated on by Associate Professor Jonathan Thaft. He said, 'When I first met these two brothers in the intensive care unit, they were very ill. We wanted to transplant their hearts but found that there was not enough time. Because of the unique location of their structure, there was no way to work on any other technology.'
