The Dhaka Times Desk The death toll from violence in Kazakhstan has risen to 225. The violence erupted from peaceful protests in oil-rich Kazakhstan against rising fuel prices.
According to media reports, law and order enforcement officers and military officers were among those killed in the violence. Kazakh authorities gave this information at a press conference.
Asel Artakshinova, spokesperson of the country's Ministry of Health, said that 2,600 people are receiving treatment in hospitals after the violence. 67 of them are in critical condition.
Authorities in Kazakhstan said the protesters were foreign 'terrorists'. They linked up with protesters in the largest city of Almaty and carried out 'terrorist' activities.
Kazakhstan reported that 44 people were killed in clashes between ordinary protesters and security forces amid earlier protests and violence. Kazakh authorities also said that 26 of the dead were armed criminals and 18 members of the security forces.
Then last week the death toll was reported as 164 on the official Telegram channel. Among them, 103 people were killed in the country's capital, Almaty.
