Some past traumatic memories can be erased by using an anesthetizing gas called xenon. They got initial success by conducting experiments on mice. The team is led by Edward G. Meloni, assistant professor at Harvard Medical School and researcher at McLean Hospital in Massachusetts. "We have evidence that xenon gas is effective in reducing traumatic memories," Meloni said. This could be a breakthrough in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Memory can be erased using xenon gas, not electric shock or brainwashing as in the movie story. According to the head of the research team, it was confirmed that xenon gas was initially applied to rats in small doses and that they forgot the fear memory. When applied to humans, they would mix xenon gas with the patient's oxygen and try to recall painful memories.
While recalling old memories, when the brain begins to create memories as new memories, the new memory creation process will be blocked by applying xenon gas again.
