The Dhaka Times Desk A US aid lorry has reached the Venezuelan border town of Cacata in Colombia, despite Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro's refusal.
At the request of the self-proclaimed president of Venezuela, Juan Guido, the United States sent aid to Venezuela, but the army supported by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro stopped it at the border, calling it a threat to its sovereignty.
The lorries which arrived yesterday (Thursday) contain food and medicines. Colombian police escorted them to Venezuela on motorcycles.
However, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro called the US aid an "attempt to humiliate" and said that the people of Venezuela are not so beggars.
According to local relief organizations and related sources, the international press said that it is not certain how the aid from the United States will reach Venezuela now, if it will reach at all.
However, the people of Venezuela are extremely angry with Maduro due to allegations of election rigging and economic crisis. For that reason, the people of the country have been protesting against him for the last 4 years.
Meanwhile, capitalizing on the ongoing anti-government protests, the country's opposition leader, Juan Guido, declared himself interim president on January 23.
On January 28, US President Donald Trump's administration imposed sanctions on Venezuela's state-owned oil and gas company PDVSA in the United States.
Due to extreme political instability, Venezuela has reached the brink of civil war. There is also the fear of US aggression.
