Barisal is an old and traditional district. Bibi Pond is the name of a traditional reservoir located in the heart of Barisal city. This pond was dug by Jinnat Bibi in 1908 AD to alleviate the water shortage of the people. Located on the east side of Sadar Road of the city, Bibi Pond is 1850 feet long and 400 feet wide. Later, the centenary pond came to be known as Bibi Pond after the name of Jinnat Bibi. At that time there were two junctions of Bibi pond with Kirtankhola river through canal. That's why the tide was regularly seen in this pond like the river!
According to history, some Christian missionaries arrived in Barisal in early 1600 AD. Following that, William Carey, the father of Bengali printing literature, stayed in Barisal in the 1800s. William Carey rescued Jinnat Bibi from Portuguese pirates and took it upon himself to raise her. The house of Undivided Bengal Minister Hashem Ali Khan was the residence of Jinnat Bibi.
It is known that after the establishment of Barisal Municipality, Bibi Pond has been renovated and re-excavated several times. Currently, the pond is beautified with a hanging park, seating benches, fountains and lighting. Besides, an open recreation center and public square have been constructed near Bibi Pond, which is now known as Hiran Square.

If you want to travel from Dhaka to Barisal by road then it will take around 7/8 hours. Buses of different types of transport depart regularly from Gabtali Bus Terminal of the capital every day from 6 am to 10 pm. Shakura, Eagle and Hanif Paribahan AC/Non-AC bus ticket price is Tk 500 to Tk 800 per person (variable). Buses bound for Barisal from Dhaka usually stop at Natullabad bus stand in Barisal city.
Launch travel is more comfortable than bus. Launch is the best way to travel Dhaka-Barisal. Launches bound for Barisal depart from Sadarghat launch terminal between 8 pm and 9 pm in the evening. The launches will reach Barisal Ghat early next day. Sundarban 7 or 8, Surbhi 8, Parabat 11, Kirtankhola 1 or 2 launch deck rent is Tk 150 per person, double cabin rent is Tk 1600 and VIP cabin rent is Tk 4500.
After reaching Barisal's launch ghat or bus stand, you can take a rickshaw to see Bibi Pond located on the east side of Sadar Road in the city.
