Ulipur Munsibari is located in Dharnibari Union of Ulipur Upazila of Kurigram. Just 2 km away from Ulipur Bazar, the huge buildings of Munsibari stand on an area of 39 acres. This fine architectural Munsibari was built in the 18th century under the supervision of Shri Brajendra Lal Munsi, foster son of Binodi Lal. The main building has bedrooms, dining hall, kitchen, drawing room, rest room and guesthouse. At the rear of the main house there is also a Shiva temple, Tulsi Bedi, open dol mancha, nat temple, Durga temple and baths with wells. Besides the main gate, there are jackfruit trees and well-kept ponds.
According to history, after the death of Krishnanath Nandi, the 7th zamindar of Kashim Bazar, a Munsef or Munshi named Binodi Lal worked as an accountant under his wife Maharani Swarnamoyi Devi. It is said that one day Binodi Lal Munshi was hunting and saw a frog caught and eaten by a snake. In earlier days, people believed that if you live in a place where frogs catch and eat snakes, you can become the owner of a lot of wealth. So a house was built at this place with permission from Binodi Lal Maharani Swarnamoyi.
Then in 1971, during the Liberation War, when Munsilal's descendants moved to Kolkata, the ownership of the house changed several times. Currently, Ulipur Munsibari is registered as a protected antiquities under the supervision of Bangladesh Archeology Department. Two rooms in the main building are being used as Dharnipur Union Land Office. Also daily puja is performed at Govinda Mandir in Munsibari.
how to go
By road, you can go to Kurigram from Asadgate, Kalyanpur or Gabtali in Dhaka by Nabil, Hanif, Haque Special, Tanzila and Ena buses. Again you can go to Kurigram directly by Kurigram Express train from Kamalapur Railway Station and Airport Railway Station. After reaching Kurigram city, you can come to Munsibari via Ulipur market of Dharanibari union of Ulipur upazila by local easy bike or CNG.
