The Dhaka Times Desk A huge swarm of desert locusts has entered India from Pakistan. Locusts have already started attacking at least 16 districts of Rajasthan, India.
Local experts said locusts are spreading rapidly in the region due to lack of crops and favorable winds. Rajasthan Agriculture Commissioner Dr. Om Prakash said, 'There is no crop in the field. Swarms of locusts have begun to spread far and wide in search of food, destroying crops and finding no place to settle down.'
He further said, 'The locusts are becoming more annoying day by day. During control operations at night, they fly away when they see the sound or light of a tractor.'
After 26 consecutive years, in March last year, Rajasthan was once again attacked by desert locusts. The attack lasted until February this year. In this long rampage, locust swarms destroyed the crops of 6 lakh 70 thousand hectares of land in at least 12 districts of the state. According to the state government, the loss was at least over Rs 1000 crore.
Then on May 11, locusts appeared again in Ganganagar district, bordering Pakistan. A huge swarm of locusts has already spread in several districts including Bundi, Sikar, Pratapgarh, Chitragarh.
The Locust Warning Organization (LWO) under India's Union Ministry of Agriculture has warned of another major attack by the crop-destroying insect in May-June.
According to experts, locusts are an extremely harmful insect for human society. Each of these swarms can have millions to millions of moths. A small herd of them can feed 35,000 people in just one day.
