It is known that the library started its first journey with 6 thousand 487 books. At present this library has collected 16 million books and 120 million other information. Amazingly, it has 540 miles of shelves that can hold 90 million books or other items.
This library has many surprising things including newspapers and magazines of different countries, pictures, handwritten books, maps. In 1914 British soldiers attacked this library and they burnt 3000 valuable books of the library. In 1815, former President Thomas Jefferson renovated the library at a cost of $29,950. But in 1851 the library caught fire again. Two-thirds of the library was damaged. About 35,000 volumes of library books were burnt. After the American Civil War, 82 thousand volumes of books were added to the library.
There are books from different countries including China, Japan, Russia. Most of the books are written on various topics including science, literature, history, laws of different countries. There is a large collection of manuscripts. In 1864, American President Abraham Lincoln expanded the library further. At the same time, he appointed a librarian to look after it. Copyright laws were introduced at that time to protect library collections. A permanent building was constructed for the library. With the addition of new rooms, galleries, shelves and various furniture, the library takes a complete form. Then in 1939 another building named John Adam was constructed here. The library was built in 1980 with a total of 3 buildings. 40 painters and sculptors were engaged in the construction of the library building. The architects of the library are Pearson and Eulson. A Trustee Fund was formed to raise money towards the running costs of the library. After that, many people in America started depositing money in that fund. Many give different books and magazines.
