The Dhaka Times Desk India made the world's largest 'highway tunnel'! The world's largest highway tunnel was launched in the hilly state of Himachal named after the country's former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
The 9.02 km long tunnel built at a height of 10 thousand meters above the plain has all modern facilities.
However, the construction of this tunnel took 4 years longer than the estimated time. That is, its construction was supposed to be completed within 6 years of the start of work, but it was finally completed in 10 years.
KP Purushothaman, the chief engineer of the tunnel construction, said in an interview to the Indian media that the construction of the world's largest highway tunnel took longer than expected. Due to its construction, the distance from the ancient city of Manali in Himachal to the district Leh of the Ladakh region of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir has been reduced by 46 km and the road communication between these two cities will take 4 hours less than before.
CCTV cameras have been placed 60 meters inside the tunnel. Exit tunnels have also been placed at 500 meters. He said that fire extinguishers have also been installed in it to prevent fire accidents.
The chief engineer added, ensuring the efficient use of resources during its construction was definitely a major challenge. But finally we managed to finish its construction.
The most difficult task was to continue its excavation during the heavy snowfall in winter. Excavation has been done from both ends to make the tunnel. After the Rotang Pass was closed in winter, the northern end of the tunnel was inaccessible and excavation was carried out only from the southern end. Only one-fourth of the entire tunnel is excavated from the northern end and only three-fourths of the tunnel is excavated from the southern end. There were at least 46 glaciers on the way to the tunnel.
