The Dhaka Times Desk Today is March 17. Birth Centenary of Father of Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. This day is being celebrated through various programs in the golden jubilee year of Bangladesh's independence.
Mujib year started from Bangabandhu's 100th birthday last year which has been extended till December 16 this year.
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the architect of independent Bangladesh, the undisputed leader of the Bengali nation, was born on this day in 1920 in a noble Muslim family in Tungipara, Gopalganj district. That's why this day is also celebrated as National Child Adolescent Day. This day is observed as a public holiday. The theme of this year's National Children's Day is 'Bangabandhu's birthday, let the child's heart be colorful'.
On the occasion of the day, President Md. Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave separate messages. Various social and cultural organizations including the National Implementation Committee and Awami League have taken detailed programs to celebrate the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. This day will also be celebrated with due dignity in Bangladeshi embassies in other countries of the world.
On the occasion of Bangabandhu's birth centenary in the golden jubilee year of Bangladesh's independence, the National Implementation Committee of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's Birth Centenary Celebration has organized 10 days of special events.
Previously, detailed programs were taken on the occasion of Bangabandhu's hundredth birthday last year, but due to the global situation caused by the corona virus, the program of Mujib year is being celebrated by rearranging.
Chief coordinator of the national implementation committee of the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Kamal Abdul Nasser Chowdhury told the media that on the occasion of Bangabandhu's birth centenary and the golden jubilee of independence, a 10-day long special program has been organized from March 17 to March 26 at the National Parade Square. Domestic and foreign guests will participate in these events organized following the hygiene rules in the existing Covid-19 situation.
He said that the program will pay tribute to Bangabandhu through different theme-based discussions and cultural programs, audiovisual and other special performances every day. The themes of the 10-day program are –

19th March 'Yatkal Rabe Padma Yamuna'
March 20 'Light of Youth'
March 21 'Song of life in ruins'
March 22 'Banglar Mati My Mati'
23 March 'Women's Emancipation, Equality and Freedom'

March 25 'Kalratri and Light Procession of Genocide' and
26 March 'Fifty Years of Independence and Golden Line of Progress'.
President Md. Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Bangabandhu's daughter Sheikh Hasina will be present on March 17, March 19, March 22, March 24 and March 26.
Foreign heads of state and heads of government will be present as guests of honor in this 5-day event. Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Salih, Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse on March 19, Nepalese President Vidya Devi Bhari on March 22, Bhutan Prime Minister Lotte Tshering on March 24 and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 26 will be present as guests of honor in today's event.
500 invited guests will attend this 5-day event in a limited capacity following health rules. Besides this 5-day program along with other 5-day programs, the speeches recorded by the heads of state, heads of government, heads of international organizations and important people of different countries will be displayed. Every day program will be telecasted live on television channels, online media and social media.
In 1940, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman started his political career by joining the All India Muslim Students Federation. In 1946, he was elected as the General Secretary of Kolkata Islamia College (now Maulana Azad College) Students' Union.
Bangabandhu was elected joint editor of the East Pakistan branch of the then Awami Muslim League in 1949. He was elected General Secretary of the party in 1953 and Member of East Bengal Legislative Assembly in 1954 on United Front ticket. This undisputed leader, who has been vocal throughout his life for the right of the Bengali nation, has had to be imprisoned many times in his political career for taking a stand for justice.
Bangabandhu led every democratic and independence movement, including the language movement of 1952, the United Front elections of 1954, the anti-military movement of 1958, the 6-point and later 11-point movements of 1966, and the popular uprising of 1969, and earned the title Bangabandhu. Under his courageous and visionary leadership, the Bengali nation started preparing step by step for the great freedom movement.
Despite the absolute victory of Awami League in the general elections of 1970, the military junta of Pakistan at that time did not hand over power and started various kinds of torture on the Bengali nation. Bangabandhu called for freedom struggle in his historic March 7 speech of 1971. It has been recognized as a world heritage by inclusion in UNESCO's International Memory of the World Register.
On the other hand, on March 26 (midnight of March 25), he officially declared the independence of Bangladesh and the liberation war began in 1971 under his leadership. The much-desired victory and independence of Bengalis was achieved through a bloody 9-month war.
