The Dhaka Times Desk Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny wants to read the Holy Quran while sitting in prison. But the prison authorities are not allowing him to read the Quran. So he threatened to sue.
Navalny is on hunger strike in prison due to lack of proper medical care. Russian President Vladimir Putin is under fire worldwide for poisoning, imprisoning, human rights violations. He has already made a fresh complaint against the prison authorities.
Navalny, a staunch critic of the Russian president, reportedly announced the lawsuit against prison officials in an Instagram message. He complained that he was not allowed to read the Quran. In that message, he said that he was inspired to read the Qur'an for self-improvement during his imprisonment. But the authorities did not allow him to read it.
The Instagram post by Alexei, a 44-year-old Kremlin critic, comes as the Muslim holy month of Ramadan begins.
Navalny said he was not allowed to read the books he had bought or ordered in the past few months. He was informed that the prison authorities would check whether the book contained any extremist content and then allow it. It will take at least 3 months for the authorities to do that.
It should be noted that last year, on the way back to Moscow from Siberia, Navalny was tried to be killed with Novichok, a nerve agent of the Soviet era. Navalny fell into a coma after being poisoned. Later he recovered after long treatment in Germany.
Navalny was detained at the airport after returning to Moscow from Germany on January 17. A Moscow court later sentenced him to three and a half years in prison for violating the terms of his suspended sentence. He is currently in jail.
